Dear Ed -

My heart has been heavy since my conversation with Susan Wardlow. I have
spent the time since thinking of your gentle spirit, towering curiosity,
and enthusiastic intellect. Must of all I miss that laugh and eye crinkle
thing that happens when an idea excites you. I had thought of you just
last week when reading of Shakespeare's possible drug use. I meant to
forward the story to you about the archaeological analysis of the pipe
residue and I had visualized your delight at the article contents.

I often think of how you, I, and my friend Tom were all at Dupont Circle
in Washington on a certain day in 1971. May 3rd to be exact, you were in
the coffee house writing in your journal, I was taking photos and dodging
the police, and Tom was being arrested
http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/big/0503.html . We
didn't know each other then but the connection was still there Years
later when we discussed that day it gave us all great pleasure to have had
different vantage points within such close proximity.

The last time I spoke with you in person was several years ago. You came
to Washington, visited the Library of Congress, Peace Park friends and
stayed at Biltmore Street. We sat up and discussed the state of the world,
over a bottle of something, and you told me how happy you where. How the
personal loneliness you had felt for years was gone and the love that you
felt for Karen had filled your life with a renewed joy and passion. I was
so happy for you as they say "it couldn't have happened to a nicer
man".

Every event, every chance encounter, and every person you met was consumed
with relish and zeal. And you have the singular ability to make each
person you focus in on feel interesting and unique, worthy of time and
cosmic concentration. After spending time with you I always came away
wishing that I had talked less and listened more. You may not know how
special you are but I hope that you have some sense of the people who you
have touched. I never failed to enjoy our conversations and our time
together. My only regret is that we didn't spend more time together and
that the New York City summit never materialized. Rest in Peace my friend.

Love, Lori Dibble
