It's fine to post what I wrote on the web, but my words feel very
inadequate in expressing the depth of Ed's meaning to me. That, in
itself, is what Ed contributed. The cognitive/informational was far
less important than the emotional connection. The word "spiritual"
fits, because, for me, "spirit" is (as in team spirit), the energy I
feel when I connect with something larger than I am. That can be a
sunrise on Hana Bay, deep conversation with one or more people, or a
galvanizing energy around a cause. I never watched sunrise on Hana
Bay with Ed (though I'd have loved to), but I certainly felt the
energy of conversation and cause with him. Although Ed may not have
thought of it in this way, through his warmth, passion, and
commitment he introduced me to social consciousness as a spiritual
endeavor.
