OMEGA, if anyone didn't know, was the a black, Labrador A SOCIOLOGICAL EXPERIMENT. Omega was the new character Cannabis, the big black cat and my loyal buddy, hardly Paul Laub
peppy puppy that followed Ed home in early or
mid 1987. Or late 86? Anyway, I was living at the house
at the time, and remember the day of Omega's arrival.
Where did he come from? Who knows? He had no collar.
I imagine that initially Omega adopted Ed more than the
other way around. Perhaps Ed showed him some amusement,
tossing him a stick to chase, and wound up with a loyal
buddy at his heels all of the way home.
in the house, full of energy. Out back by the pool I'd
toss him a stick or branch and off he would go. He'd be
ready to bring it back to me, except that I'd then hold
up a stouter or longer stick. Out of his mouth,
instantly forgotten and irrelevant, dropped the current
stick. After several iterations, I was offering him a
branch several feet long, weighing a large fraction of
his own body weight, something absurdly big long for
the little dog he was. That's when we would both quit the
game for the day, each of realizing how silly things
had become. The current stick was never good enough
when I had a bigger one to offer.

Austin, the resident bibliophile at the time,
enthusiastically took up the cause of Omega, caring
for and lavishing attention on the dog. Omega became
Jim's new project, each fulfilling the other.
