Subject: Ed Powell
I was so sorry to hear of Ed's death. I met him only twice, at meetings of the doctoral committee of Catherine Schultz. He was one of the subject matter experts who contributed an enormous amount of time and emotion and energy and substance to her degree program. While I did not know him apart from these meetings, and occasionally group emails that we would exchange, I was simply amazed at the depth of his knowledge of sociology, his ability to sort out essentials, his commitment to G.H. Mead, and his ability to allow for the existence of new paradigms that he might not personally accept. He was such a giving, loving man. He made me feel as if my own research work was special, even though he really had no reason to take the trouble to engage me in a conversation about it. What a wonderful man, and I can only imagine the countless number of people he must have so modestly encouraged and nurtured. My love to all of the family. Bethe Hagens, Union Institute Core Faculty
