I was a student of Ed's in 1973. Ed Powell wasn't a favorite professor - at first. Later, much later, I found him again as a professor, and this time "drank from the chalice" of his wisdom. He opened my eyes to anomie, to the importance of breaking with structure, and to know when structure was to be maintained. He retaught me Santayana, and encouraged this daughter of the working class to never give up. I am a better person and a better sociologist and a better teacher because of him. The world isn't as good a place without him in it. We - all of his students - are better people, better sociologists, because of him. Thank you to his family for encouraging him to continue teaching us.
