I posted this on the other page, so I'll repost it here: I am now a police officer in Virginia. I attended UB in the mid 70's
and I took some courses from your dad. The first course I took was
"Criminology". This was at a time when any and all dessent at UB was
crushed by the formation of the ungodly Amherst Campus and burnout in
general. As an 8th grader I witnessed the UB riots. Most everyone in
that class was taking it as an elective and they just wanted to sit back
and collect some credits toward their Accounting or Marketing degrees.
I had some rather conservative views at the time, and after a few days,
I threw off all restraint to tell your father how "full of shit" he
was. I didn't care what kind of grade I got, but I was going to
straighten him out. He never held my views against me. He respected
the fact that I had the guts to express those views despite the fact
that they opposed his views(I got an A). Your father was one of the few
who truly believed in intellectual freedom.
The ironic part is that after twenty years as a policeman, I now agree
with many of his views, especially in the area of drug enforcement.
