I'm so sad to have learned about Ed's sudden death. My days as a UB grad student (1970's) and later as a Delaware park jogger were immeasurably better for having known him. Ed and I routinely cross paths socially and politically (and occasionly on bicycle!). I never took a class, yet learned much from him about how to be a sociologist, a colleague, a neighbor. Ed was incredibly supportive of students and a pain in the ass to the university. It was a wonderful, necessary mixture of qualities for someone committed to 'teaching' others. We all learned alot about how to be demanding AND accepting, critical AND tolerant, skeptical AND understanding. i could only hope to have a small portion of impact on my students that I know Ed enjoyed with his. My sympathy and respect to his family and dear friends.
