I met Ed when I was 17 or 18. He was a friend (lover) of my mother--someone I could have been suspicious of, I suppose, but I loved him--how could I not? He gave me my first book as an adult would be given a book by someone who respected them. This was a book --The glory of Hera, by Philip Slater--that spoke to my mind and opened the door into alternate (feminist) studies of classical mythology. I made him a giant red, white, and blue scarf on gigantic knitting needles that year.

He showed me the excitement of a committed intellectual life and made me feel that was something I could pursue if I wanted to. Thank you, Ed! You made a difference in my life.
