I graduated from UB in 1995 and knew Ed Powell as something of a celebrity. I didn't know him personally, but through friends. Admiration for him was automatic. After I graduated I found Bhagavad-gita As It Is in a used bookstore, and ended up joining the Hare Krishna movement. On the back cover was a quote: "If truth is what works, as Pierce and the pragmatists insist, there must be a kind of truth in the Bhagavad-Gita As-it-is, since those who follow its teachings display a joyous serenity usually missing in the bleak and strident lives of contemporary people." -Dr. Elwin H. Powell, Professor of Sociology, State University of New York. I always knew of him as "Ed," so I didn't know what to make of the name "Elwin". It seemed like it ought to be him, but I eventually figured "I guess not." But today I just saw the quote again and decided to put the name into Google. It's nice to have this opportunity to remember him.
